HISTORY

Scouts BSA Troop 924 is one of the oldest and most respected troops in Evanston. The Troop was chartered in 1926 and has been meeting at Northminster Presbyterian Church ever since. Through the years, many of the Troop’s members and leaders have also been members of Northminster. This has helped to create a strong relationship between the Church and the Troop. Please join us for an upcoming activity.

Our current Scoutmaster is Marcello Bondurant. Marcello is an Evanston native who has also served as a Cubmaster, as a District Commissioner, and as an Assistant Scoutmaster for the 2017 National Boy Scout Jamboree. The Scoutmaster is supported by a Troop Committee, led by Tisha Martin, in which all parents are encouraged to participate. Only through participation by parents in a variety of roles – treasurer, event planners, fundraising organizers, and other functional roles – can the Troop effectively provide the Scouts a full experience of Scouting. Troop 924 belongs to the Potawatomi District within the Northeast Illinois Council NEIC.

Scouts and parents are able to manage troop particpation and advancement via Scoutbook.

CAMPING

Our Troop is a camping Troop, with monthly campouts and a two-week summer camp experience. A sample of other camping activities include our annual Iron Chef Competition each June, Commando Campout each November (think extreme Capture the Flag), Michigan luge and ski trips, and finding outfitters to help arrange fat tire biking and rock climbing excursions.

Leadership

LEADERSHIP

The Scout usually begins within the Troop by taking on a leadership position that either guides others or manages resources. Senior Scouts focus more on the development of their leadership skills and in the mentoring of the younger Scouts. Multiple training opportunities exist, with many opting to take part in National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT). NYLT is the equiavalent of a college-level management class and prepares the Scout for success beyond Scouting.

High Adventure

HIGH ADVENTURE

Older scouts have the opportunity to participate in High Adventure trips. These trips vary in scale but are a special program where the activity is chosen by the Scoutmaster. Previous High Adventure trips have included backpacking and canoeing activities to places like Wyoming, South Dakota, New Mexico, and the Minnesota/Ontario Boundary Waters.

ORDER OF THE ARROW

The Order of the Arrow is the Scouting national honor society. Young Adults and Scouters are elected by the troop and represent living Scouting values in their daily lives. Each lodge member pledges to continue living the ideals of offering cheerful service through fellowship. Troop 924 OA members belong to the Potowatami chapter of the Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan lodge.
